Why are there multiple versions of kernel on system
Environment
- Red Hat Enterprise Linux (All Versions)
Issue
- Found many kernel
- Is it OK to have more than one kernel installed
- Found multiple versions of kernel
Resolution
- There is no downside of having multiple kernels in system. Rather it is good idea to have multiple versions of the kernel, so that if any issue occurs in one kernel system will reboot with another available kernel. It can occasionally be useful if system run into problems with a particular kernel for some reasons. Whenever system or kernel packages undergoes update old kernel remains and new kernel get installed and becomes default kernel so more than one kernel can be found after upgrade.
