I cannot cluster two instances of tomcat 6 running on the same box in linux

Environment

• Apache Tomcat
  • 6.0.20
• Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL)
  • 5.2
• Enterprise Web Server (EWS)
  • 1.0.x

Issue

• Two instances of Tomcat 6 will not instance together on the same box.  The config is correct, and they can cluster when run on seperate machines but not when run on the same machine.

Resolution

There is an issue with the clustering classes used in the catalina-tribes.jar provided in the 6.0.20 release that does not play well with linux.  To resolve this upgrade to at least Tomcat 6.0.24.  Note that the JBoss Enterprise Web Server does has the Tomcat clustering functionality removed as it is not considered production ready.
